One of the really fun parts of organizing your wedding is deciding on your wedding cake decorations. Nowadays there are more choices than ever when it comes to cakes, so there is no shortage of options you can have.
Wedding Cake Toppers

If you are having a traditional style of cake, finishing it with a wedding cake topper is a quick and easy thing to do. There are now toppers available online to fit almost any theme and style of wedding whether you are having a beach theme wedding, medieval wedding or eco-friendly wedding.
Another option is to ask your cake baker to create unique toppers that look like you and your partner. You can even include other people or pets. For instance, I was making the decorations at one wedding where the couple had a cake topper that included their pet dog (see photo above).
Flower Wedding Cake Decorations
I’ve had the pleasure of decorating many wedding cakes with flowers over the years. There are a number of different options that you can take, the most simple being a small arrangement of flowers on the top of the cake.

If you are feeling more adventurous, flowers can be arranged in between the tiers of the cake and this can look quite spectacular. Choose flowers that have been used throughout the ceremony to retain a coordinated look. I’ve found that roses work particularly well but you can use other flowers such as chrysanthemums, calla lilies or orchids.
Another option is to place flowers on the side of cake. This can work well on a tiered cake that does not have columns or pillars. You can see an example of how I decorated a cake with this technique in the photo.
Flowers do not necessarily need to be real. You can still great results from using sugarcraft flowers such as roses (below left) or silk flowers (below right)

Cupcake Wedding Cakes
Cupcakes are a very popular choice at the moment for wedding cakes. They work particularly well because a variety of different flavors can be made, so guests have a choice. A variety of cupcake decorations can be used which adds to the fun of this type of cake.

Part of the skill of making cupcake wedding cakes look attractive, is the stand that they are presented on. You can hire or purchase perspex stands that are specifically for cupcakes. If you are having them professionally created, your baker may also have a suitable stand.
The Wedding Cake Table
It is common for the wedding cake to be placed on a separate table. There is then the small ceremony of the bride and groom cutting the cake. As this will be a focal point for guests, it is a nice idea to ensure that those the table and area around it is nicely decorated. One option is to place a wedding backdrop behind the table and flowers on the table itself.
Spend some time thinking about the type of stand the wedding cake is going to be placed on as this can have dramatic effect on how the cake looks to your guests. Many venues will have a cake stand that they are willing to let you use but you should ask them in advance about the style of it.
